Jack & Ruth Eckerd

Jack and Ruth Eckerd

Both Jack and Ruth Eckerd, founders of Eckerd Youth Alternatives (EYA), had tremendous vision,  leadership and commitment to creating an organization that  guides youth to a better path in life.

The Eckerds were true partners in both life and love.  They had a rare, loving, mature marriage in which each inspired and encouraged the other to achieve more than they ever thought possible. Their deep love for each other and for all children set a standard of excellence for us, that we are deeply committed to maintaining.

The Eckerds philosophy was that each
youth is
valuable and a treasure in this
world. They believed that every child
deserves a chance to succeed.

Jack's Legacy for Kids Lives On

Today, Eckerd is a national leader in helping youth succeed, serving more than 12,000 each year with nearly 40 programs nationwide. Although Jack passed away in 2004, his legacy lives on in the faces, voices, minds and hearts of Eckerd staff, alumni and youth. Some had the pleasure of meeting him to share a hug or even a hotdog during one of his many program visits. Some never met the man, but have been profoundly touched and their lives forever changed by his legacy. Thanks to him, they are now better sons, daughters, husbands, wives, mothers and fathers.
