Merging Missions

Eckerd Kids is driven by its mission to provide and share solutions that promote the well-being of children and families in need of a second chance. Part of that belief focuses on our ability to share our management and innovation successes with other organizations who may be struggling to achieve their mission.

The next several years will see a marked increase in nonprofit collaborations, including mergers. Some of the factors likely to drive this trend include Baby Boomer executive retirements, the Affordable Care Act’s emphasis on integrated services, and governmental downward pressure on care reimbursement rates. In August 2014, Eckerd Kids announced its affiliation with CARING for Children in Asheville, North Carolina, as part of its commitment to share its successes with similar organizations. Founded in 1975, CARING for Children is based on a community need to provide shelter care services to children. Over the next 10 years, CARING collaborated with local government agencies to address issues within their community. They have since evolved into an  organization with diverse programs meeting the needs of more than 1,100 local children and families last year, and their partnership with Eckerd Kids will enable both organizations to better serve vulnerable children and their families.

Eckerd Kids announced its second affiliation on January 30th, 2015 — this time to its long-time partner Paxen Learning. Paxen specializes in developing and delivering outcome-based educational programs that build academic and employability skills for at-risk youths and adults. Each year, thousands graduate from Paxen programs. The company currently operates 24 programs in four states as well as the District of Columbia. Its clients and partners include the American Hotel and Lodging Association, Department of Defense, Department of Juvenile Justice, Home Builders Institute, National Guard,  state Departments of Labor, and local Workforce Investment Boards. Founded in 1985, Paxen complements Eckerd Kids’ mission by providing services that allow individuals to  develop fundamental life, education and workforce skills that together form the building blocks for better lives.
