Character education, violence prevention and substance abuse prevention services are available to elementary and middle school students in several locations in Florida through a proven model called Eckerd Kids Hi-Five. In weekly classroom sessions that combine instruction and role-playing, students build skills for controlling impulses, managing anger, coping with peer pressure and gaining empathy for others. Taking it a step further, family workshops help students transfer the skills learned in school to their homes. Children who need more intensive help receive an individualized prevention plan, mentoring and involvement in meaningful community service programs. According to a Harvard University study, Eckerd Kids’ Hi-Five model positively impacted student behavior at nearly twice the rate of other programs operating across the United States.
